Our exhibition exhibition Mutabilities - propositions to an unknown universe is on at The Christchurch Art Galley Te Puna o Waiwhetū.

The show combines a series of mixed media photgraphic works, sculpture and drawing/collages in this beautiful gallery. Transformation is at the heart here. Please go and see the show!

The show will be on until the 16th of February 2025.

Victoria and I are invited to spend the Month of May at Sutton House and Garden to develop new sculptural work for our upcoming exhibition Mutabilities - Propositions to unknown events at Te Puna o Waiwhetū, Christchurch Art Gallery this September.

We are selected finalists for the 2020 Parkin Drawing Prize. Our new work Concretions - acid 2020 and Concretions - pink 2020 will be exhibited at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, Wellington.

The competition attracted 482 entries, of which 76 have been selected for the short-list.
The national drawing competition, attracting a major prize of $25,000, was launched by philanthropist and arts patron, Chris Parkin eight years ago. Ten highly commended prizes worth $500.00 each will also be awarded.

An advisory panel, consisting of leading contemporary Maori artist, writer and curator Professor Robert Jahnke ONZM, Dr Sarah Farrar, Head of Curatorial and Exhibitions at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki, and arts commentator/writer Dr Andrew Paul Wood, spent hours assessing hundreds of entries before coming up with the short-list.

The works will be showcased at the Parkin Drawing Prize exhibition at the NZ Academy of Fine Arts (4 - 30 August) and the winning submission will be selected and announced by Charlotte Davy, Head of Art at Te Papa Tongarewa at the gala announcement of the Parkin Drawing Prize exhibition on Monday 3 August 2020.

The diptych Perilous forces - acid meets pink has been selected as a finalist work for exhibition at The Ashburton Art Gallery.

The exhibition will run from the 7 March - 20 April.

Our upcoming exhibition Concretions - the act of coming together opens on the 7th of May at Chambers Art Gallery at 5.30pm. All welcome!

The exhibition of new work is a result of and inspired by our Volcanic Artist Residency in Whakatane including two visits to Whakaari/White Island in 2018.

During the opening there will be a unique opportunity for the public to experience a Happening performed by two contemporary dancers, Julia Harvie and Josie Archer.

Concretions - drawing Forces #2 has been selected as a finalist work for exhibition at The Ashburton Art Gallery.

The exhibition will run from the 2 March - 7 April.

Our touring exhibition From the Edge of Spaces opened at Whangarei Art Museum and will run until 11th of November.

Edwards + Johann are selected finalists for the 2018 Parkin Drawing Prize. Their new work Concretions - Drawing forces #2 will be exhibited at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, Wellington. 463 works were submitted and the selectors made some difficult decisions to shortlist 72 works for 2018. An advisory panel, consisting of Emma Bugden, John Gow and Simon Rees decided on the short-list for exhibition. The winning submission will be selected and announced by this year's judge Kelcy Taratoa at the opening at the Fine Arts Gallery on the 16 of July.

Edwards+Johann are selected finalists for the National Contemporary Art Awards.

The judge Reuben Friend selected 32 artworks for exhibition. The opening of the exhibition and the award presentation will be held from 5.30pm on Friday 3 August at Waikato Museum. The National Contemporary Art Award will be exhibited from Saturday 4 August - Sunday 28 October 2018.

The authors in this publication look at this rare contemporary practice in a thought-provoking way to unpeel and examine the methods and ways the artists engage with the world they live in.

Well-known artists Dr.Victoria Edwards and Ina Johann began working together as EDWARDS + JOHANN in 2007. We opened our touring exhibition From the Edge of Spaces at Whakatane Library and Exhibition centre. The new director Eric Holowacz invited us to become the Inaugrual Volcanic Artits in Residence in Whakatane visiting Whakaari White Island. This year the Trust received 428 entries from which 83 entries have been selected as finalists. From the finalists 55 have been chosen for the Award Winners & Travelling exhibition and the balance is represented in the Salon des Refuses.

The finalists have been selected by the 2017 judging panel, comprising of by prominent members of the arts sector Linda Tyler, Richard Maloy, Russ Flatt, Steve Carr, Phil Dadson and Ruth Watson.

Edwards+Johann are selected finalists for the 2017 Parkin Drawing Prize. Their diptych work On the Seam of Things - Constellations #1 will be exhibited at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, Wellington. An advisory panel, consisting of Dr. Warren Feeney, John Gow, Simon Rees and Kelcy Taratoa decided on the short-list for exhibition out of over 500 entries. The winning submission will be selected and announced by this year's judge Seraphine Pick at the opening of the Parkin Prize Exhibition on the 1. August.

The Parkin Drawing Prize exhibition runs until 27 August 2017 at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts Gallery, Queens Wharf, Wellington.

The exhibition EVENTS GROWING from the EDGE of SPACES at The Pah Homestead, TSB Wallace Arts Centre presents recent works.

The exhibition is part of the Auckland Festival of Photography Programme and runs until the 9th of July.

The series On the Seam of Things - Constellations and Constellations - drawing strength record the gradual process of drawing, part of the work's becoming; a probing and mapping of new territory. Drawing acts like an obsessive caress on the photographic surface, finding form and meaning as motif for the tensions and dichotomies inherent in life. This territory reflects a basic human condition...to connect, work, play and test the space we inhabit to deal with crises and to grow. The seam is a point of connection but also a space of friction, tension and inevitable fragility. The series An Embezzlement of Sort is a dark, yet playful space of human propositions to 'unknown' events.

Edwards+Johann are selected finalists for the National Contemporary Art Award. The judge Elisabeth Caldwell selected 51 artworks for exhibition. Announcement of winner and exhibition opening will be on the 28th of July at Waikato Museum, Hamilton.

The exhibition is on until the 5th of November 2017.

Judge Felicity Milburn awarded the work On the seam of things - Constellations #8 one of four Highly Commended Awards in this year's Molly Morpeth Canaday Award 2017. Selected from 430 entries and 80 finalists the work will be on display at the Te Koputu a te Whanga a Toi, Whakatane Library and Exhibition Centre.

Judges comment:

"An elegant essay in the art of juxtaposition, this work combines photography and drawing to compelling effect. Vast natural forces, threatening to collide, loom beside a figure-like form that has been assembled from an inexplicable convergence of materials. Rods of colour connect the two compositional fields, imbuing the work with a sense of mysterious and unstable energy."

Our diptych work Constellations - drawing strength #8/9 has been selected as a finalists work in the Wallace Art Awards 2016.

The work will be included in the travelling exhibition.

This year the Trust received 371 entries from which 88 entries have been selected as finalists.

The finalists have been selected by the 2016 judging panel, comprising of by prominent members of the arts sector Andrew Clifford, Georgina Ralston, Philip Trusttum, Richard Maloy and Sam Mitchell.

All finalsists' works will shortly be delivered to the Pah Homestead, TSB Bank Wallace Arts Centre, when round two of judging will commence. The judges will select the Award Winners, and a proportion of the works will be shown as part of the Award Winners & Travelling Finalists exhibition, with the balance shown in the Salon des Refuses.

The wall installation Constellations - Life beteen buildings, no2, #1-13, 2016 has been selected by this year's judge Kim Paton.

The award winner will be announced at the exhibition opening and award ceremony at Te Koputu a te whanga a Toi Friday, 5 August 2016 at 6 pm.

Judge Zara Stanhope selected the work On the seam of things - Constellations #5 to be the Supreme Winner of the New Zealand Painting and Printmaking Award 2016. Selected from 41 finalists the work will be on display during the Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival.

"Everyone artist deserves an award. However, the winner of the Waikato Painting and Print Award are Edwards + Johann for their intriguing figure set in a diptych or two part image that uses photography and drawing. The strange personae seems to be an assemblage of everyday objects, including rubber gloves and a vacuum cleaner giving us a hint of gender in an otherwise ambiguous veiled torso. This sense of intrigue is accentuated by the abstract motifs and strange floating geological forms with their delicately inscribed lines. Overall, On the Seam of Things - Constellation #5 evokes the artist curiosity in the tension of bringing matter together, the real and abstract, artificial and natural, mind and body."

The work On the seam of things - Constellations #5 is one of the works selected by this year's judge Zara Stanhope and will be shown at the prestigious New Zealand Painting and Painting Award exhibition during the Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival in February 2016.

Our work On the seam of things - Constellations #4 has been selected as a finalists work in the Wallace Art Awards 2015 and we are delighted that the work will be included in the travelling exhibition.

This year the Trust received 531 entries from which 85 entries have been selected as finalists.

The finalists have been selected by the 2015 judging panel, comprising of prominent art practitioners Joyce Campbell, Andrew Clifford, Ian Jervis, Andrew McLeod and Philip Trusttum.

An advisory panel, consisting of Senior Lecturer in Painting at the University of Canterbury Roger Boyce, Associate Professor, Arts commentator, historian and writer Dr. Warren Feeney, poet, painter, curator and editor,Gregory O'Brien and New Zealand artist Judy Darragh selected the finalists for exhibition out of nearly 500 entries.

The winning submission will be selected and announced by artist Dick Frizzell at a gala event at the Academy Galleries/ Wellington on Monday 7th of September.

Edwards+Johann are selected finalists for the National Contemporary Art Award. The judge Aaron Kreisler selected 53 artworks for exhibition out of 325 entries. Announcement of winner and exhibition opening will be on the 17th of July at Waikato Museum, Hamilton.

Our three month Residency at Altes Spital has started!

Here we are - mountains, rivers, lakes...sounds like New Zealand - definitely not!

We are staying at Altes Spital  Cultural Centre in Solothurn. The weather is still cold, misty and the landscape has a magical monochromatic camouflage to offer....we are exploring the area by foot with our cameras - bringing a little colour to the scene. It's exciting, new, strange, curious, 'fantastisch'...

Our numerous outings, visits to contemporary exhibitions and permanent collections/museums in Basel, Bern, Zuerich and Luzern are a feast and continue to enrich our experience constantly.

The work On the seam of things - Constellations #2� has been selected as a finalist work. It is one of 32 works selected to be a part of the Award Winners & Travelling Finalists show.

Announcement of winners will be 1st of September 2014 at the Pah Homestead, TSB Bank Wallace Arts Centre. The Exhibition of Winners and Selected Finalists will be open to the public at the Pah Homestead from Tuesday the 2nd of September to Sunday the 9th of November 2014.

The exhibition will be travel to Pataka, Porirua City, where it will be on display from the 29th of November 2014 to the 8th of February 2015. From here the exhibition will also travel to the Wallace Gallery Morrinsville before returning to Auckland in late April 2015.

Edwards+Johann will be Artists in Residence at Otago Polytechnic, School of Art from 25 August - 12 September.

We are delighted to announce that we have been selected to occupy one of the six newly established artist studios in the rear part of gallery Chambers241 in Christchurch! 

Chambers241 is a new initiative developed by Dr. Warren Feeney and Ronald Mottram. The cultural programme includes group and solo exhibitions, performances, concerts and more. We are excited to be part of this cultural hub centred on the periphery of our munted inner city.

We look forward to productive times and new beginnings here in Christchurch. Visitors are welcome to our studio by appointment.

We are pleased to announce that we will also present our latest exhibition Faculty of Wonder - Lost and Found in the gallery spaces at Chambers241 on Moorehouse Avenue from the 1-12 of November. Opening night is Tuesday the 1st of November at 5.30pm. All Welcome.

The exhibition will further explore our sense of wonder, theatricality and performative elements alongside photography and drawing. The installation will ponder human concepts such as loss, disorientation and connection. The underlying notion is one of a secret garden, where beauty and unease live alongside each other creating a space of magical, theatrical other-ness ; a space of potential and hope.

Wonderfully witty and inventive collaborative artists Edwards + Johann bring their photographic skills and imaginations to transform the gallery into a magical spectacle.
